Business Continuity is vital at the business, sector, regulator, and national level. War is one of the chief scenarios that bring these coordinated capabilities to the spotlight.
BCM at a business level identifies critical departments and employees that can help assist in business recovery. BCM at a sector level identifies critical businesses that would need to assist in sector recovery. BCM at the national level identified critical sectors such as telecom, power, aviation, and other critical infrastructures for national recovery.
One recent example is of, Telecommunication playing an integral part in a nation’s ability to recover from disruptions. And this is apparent as we see the war escalation in Ukraine.
As the Russian invasion progresses, telecommunications operators in Ukraine are challenged in continuing to provide services in several sections of the nation. The Ukrainian authorities issued a message that networks were experiencing severe outages.
As a recovery measure, Ukraine's vice prime minister and the country's minister of digital transformation sent a tweet out to Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX as a possible recovery strategy to deploy satellite-based internet services to counter Russia’s intervention. Further to the request, it has been recently tweeted that the company's Starlink satellite internet service is now up and running in Ukraine and Additional terminals are on the way.
It seems that the activation of Starlink services in the country would help circumvent Russia's attempts to cut off Ukraine from the rest of the world. Enabling an enterprise view with real-time monitoring of each sector and probable recovery activities being deployed and their progress could be an effective way to recover from threats like the war Ukraine is facing right now.
In the light of enterprise view, Flightradar24 is another great example. Apart from telecommunication, another element to consider is airspace monitoring.
Flightradar24 is a global flight tracking service that gives you real-time updates on thousands of planes worldwide. This tracking service can help Ukraine and the world keep an eye on airspace activities that may come as part of Russian intrusion. This is an excellent way of preparing against Russian and other allied forces progressing into the country and enabling a transparent view of the evolving situation on the ground.
These are incredible examples of Real-time solutions that provide you with a competitive advantage in decision-making. When you install one, you get superior insights, accountability, and transparency, which means you can combat fake news and enable sharing of accurate information.
By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail - Benjamin Franklin.
At BCM next, we are passionate about Business Continuity and we look to add further to this banter, as we identify more applications of the BCM capabilities in Ukraine.
